Nest Products, Made in the USA and India (now closed)

We are sorry to say that Nest has closed. We are leaving this post in case you come across some fabulous Nest products at a garage sale or consignment shop.


Laura, a cofounder of Nest wrote to tell us that her company makes products in the USA and India. After some research, we are happy to add Nest to our recommended list! Nest's products are ecofriendly, using sustainable materials and organic cotton. They take fair-trade manufacturing seriously and follow fair-trade labor standards at their factories in India. We know that you'll love the cool modern designs and feel confident that you're doing the planet and your children good.

Most Little Tikes Toys, Made in the USA

A brand many moms and dads have come to know and love, is mostly made right here in the USA. If you're thinking of a playhouse, toddler bed or a mini coupe for your child, Little Tikes may be the right choice for you. While some of their products are not made in the USA, they maintain a large selection of toys made here that are very high quality and still a good value. In our searching for brands made outside of China, we've come across a bunch of unrelated toys that we think are really fun and interesting! Most are from assorted brands so we've put them together in a bunch instead of separate listings. Some contain magnets or other small parts that are not for kids under 3. You've asked, we've researched and here our our top 10 recommendations for school aged kids this holiday season. You won't find any electronics on our list as we have yet to find ANY brand that doesn't contain Chinese made components. But we have some great alternatives that your kids will love.

Sculpey/ Polyform Products, Made in USA and Mexico

A reader had asked if we could do some research on Fimo. We have not heard back from them yet, but we have heard from Sculpey, a similar product. All Sculpey products are made in the USA, with the exception of EZ Shape, which is made in Mexico. If you're looking for interesting art supplies for older children, we have your solution!

You've seen the lists published by magazines, Walmart and Target. Most lists contain Fisher Price, Mattel and Playskool, all manufactured in China. Well just in time for Christmas we've got our own list of got-to-have toys for your preschooler. Check out our list for infant and toddler toys too. School age gifts coming soon! (By preschooler we mean kids 3 and up. As some readers have pointed out, many toys are not safe for children who are still putting things in their mouths. We've featured many beautiful wooden toys and the Bajo toys are no exception. We love that they're made in Poland in a factory just outside Cracow, originally founded by a sculptor and an architect. Each toy is visually pleasing and a nice addition to your collect. We also know you'll love the price!

Our latest discovery is a beautiful collection of handknitted dolls made in Peru. Blabla's dolls are made with natural fibers and are so adorable and whimsical any child would love them! Aqua Dots contain dangerous drug!

We generally reserve this column for great toys but this is really important and deserves it's own notation.

Millions of Aqua Dots toys and sets sold in the US contain an ingredient that converts to a powerful "date-rape" drug when ingested. Two US children have gone into unresponsive comas (though have now recovered) and 3 others have been hospitalized in Australia. If you have these products, please take them away immediately, even if your child no longer puts things in his/her mouth.

Looking for an interesting project for your older kids? Dune Craft makes a few selections of interesting terrariums that would be a great addition to a dresser or dinner table! Your kids will be happy to have a unique and interesting gift and you'll feel better knowing it was not made in China.

Holgate Toys are high quality wooden toys, made in the USA, primarily for infants and toddlers. They are manufactured in Pennsylvania and made with nontoxic paints. Mr. Rogers selected Holgate to make a special line of wooden toys bearing his name. If it was safe for Mr. Rogers, it's safe for us to recommend!
