Top 10 toys for Christmas that your infant and toddler has got to have!

You've seen the lists published by magazines, Walmart and Target. Most lists contain Fisher Price, Mattel and Playskool, all manufactured in China. Well just in time for Christmas we've got our own list of got-to-have toys for your infant or toddler. We will have a preschool list later this week!

Our Favorite toys for this holiday season:

There are plenty of reasons beyond recalls to avoid Chinese-made goods. China is an oppressive human rights violator, a horrendous polluter of the environment, and a rank purveyor of propaganda and injustice in the cases of Tibet, Falun Gong, and Uighurs.

I never realized how many of our things are made in China...just about everything! Stride Rite shoes? china. Coffee cups?china. Not including just about anything plastic. This season, we have made the decision not to buy any toys (or other gifts) from China.

Just to let you know..do a little research on the toy companies that are supposed to be "European" some of them sub-contract work out to China. I have gone to these toy company website to do my own research. They are now posting 'letters' stating that they oversee the work done in China for them. Hopefully this is true. I tend to have more faith in the European/small toy companies right now than I do in the huge companies.

Thanks for your information. We have done lots of research and the ones that we recommend label their packages as made in the country listed (ie not in China). While there is a possibility that some parts may be made in China (Lego and K'Nex in particular), they cannot list their product made somewhere else if the product is actually made in China.

Thanks guys -- I've been praising you far and wide, and rely on you to get ideas for my kids (3 and 6). Hopefully you'll be doing top 10s for older kids soon. And my 6YO daughter is a tomboy who hates princesses/dolls/cutesie stuff! Loves electronic mayhem of all kinds! Star Wars, Spider-Man, Transformers...What to do????

You must have typed this while we were finishing our preschool list! We hope to finish our school age list by the middle of the week. We'll look for some great suggestions for your tomboy daughter. In the meantime, look at Plan Toys- they have a lot of pretend play sets that might work well for you!

I'm a bit confused. There is a Melissa and Doug toy on the list and everything I have ever seen from them has come from China.

A very small selection of Melissa and Doug is made in the USA and most of the Melissa and Doug First Play line is made in Vietnam.

Almost all Melissa and Doug toys are made in China - not Vietnam. The company claims is doing extensive testing for lead paint, etc. and perhaps it is. But their toys should NOT be included on a site that purports to represent toys that are not made in China. I appreciate the effort in trying to put together a list of toys not made in China, but you need to check a little bit better before you post something.

KMom,
If you read our recommendation on Melissa and Doug products- we say "Brands you should check carefully". Many other sites claim that Melissa and Doug is Made in the USA. We have found one or two items that are Made in the USA.

However, the ENTIRE line of Melissa and Doug First Play is made in Vietnam. We have done our research very carefully and we have personally checked the First Play line. We do not recommend any other Melissa and Doug products.

Thank you for doing what you do. Question. Do you know of anyone who has bath toys not made in China?

Sacramento Coffee and Sacramento Safe Kids said...

So far, we have not found any bath toys that are not made in China- most bath toys are made of either hard or soft plastic so it's particularly difficult. We're still looking!

Kathe Kruse makes a couple of squirting fish toys for the bath. Also, there are the old fashioned wood boats out there that are made in the USA.

Thank-you so much for all the work you have done here. I have depended on your site to help with our China free Christmas. Although I haven't been able to find Selecta, Haba or any other German made toys in Canada. Thank goodness for international shipping!
