Melissa and Doug First Play line

While many other websites list Melissa and Doug as a Made in the USA company, we have noted that most of the Melissa and Doug products that are widely available are made in China. However, we have inspected several of the Melissa and Doug First Play line of toys and they have all been labeled "Made in Vietnam." If you are interested in Melissa and Doug for your infant, these toys are for you. Make sure the box is labeled "First Play" or double check the box for yourself. We have already checked these for you:

Wow, I was so disappointed to find M&D on the "check carefully" list. Thanks so much for your efforts on this blog! Is there another source for purchasing besides amazon? They are one company which continues to sell products that promote dogfighting (books, etc.) and I avoid them for that reason. Thanks again for helping our kids stay safe!

I actually called Melissa and Doug, and spoke to a real live person :) who answered a lot of questions about their testing policies for me.

They said that they test every single batch of toys *twice* once in the country where it's made, and then again in the U.S. before distribution.

I actually feel really confident now that even their toys made in China would be safe.

While Melissa and Doug may be "testing" their products, I will not buy from them. After all, why are they manufacturing in China? To cut corners that we won't allow them to cut here. Also, if their factory conditions are so great, why not post some pictures on their website? I really believe we'll see their names come up as a result of poor labor conditions in the near future.

I managed to find a Melissa and Doug wooden toy (a crab) from a neighborhood gift store that is made in Vietnam. And you guys are right, most of the Melissa and Doug toys I've found in that store are made in China. I personally would not buy anything from China, no matter how rigorous they claim their "testing" is.

Wow, I just bought three of their products today. I was fooled. I thought they were based in CT. Because of their dishonesty, I will never buy from them again and make sure that all my fellow moms know.

Look for Plan Toys- they make a wooden kitchen set that is really adorable and comes in pink or natural or red.

Does anyoneknow if the M&D sushi slicing play set is made in china? I'd like to buy it on-line for my nephew, but not if it is made in China.

I would not have bought these toys if I had known they were made in china I didn't see the small print the way it discrided the product thought it was made in Conn. Hope other people don't make this mistake too.
