I work in the toy industry at a small board game company. Despite the tremendous savings for manufacturing in China, we elected to stay with US materials, printing, and assembly.

Our company is particularly unique in designing and distributing eco-friendly board games. While plastic-based and painted toys most often get attention in the press, the board game category s is especially well-known for using overseas manufacturers with suspect environmental and worker health and safety issues.

To share one example of the impact of this production choice, if our company was to sell at a rate equal to the first four month launch of a well-known board game, our decision to use 100% recycled papers (50% post-consumer, PCF) would save 26 tons of greenhouse gases, 650 trees, 330 million BTUs of Energy, and 168,190 gallons of water. Again, this volume relates to one game on the market for its first four months!

Hearing feedback from consumers elsewhere, many still are struggling to find US-made goods. This would be the opportune time for retailers to offer these games and toys. But will they respond in time? Or are they hopeful the consumers will forget?

We shall see. Our company is indeed experiencing a higher number of consumers interested in our games. We are increasing production at this moment to prepare for any larger-than-normal holiday surge, especially if more retailers catch on to this demand.
