Playmobil- Made in Germany (downgraded as of 9/20/2007)

We are so disappointed to be downgrading Playmobil to a "brand to check carefully." After searching nearly 200 different Playmobil toys, we were positive that the Playmobil website was accurate when stating that 99% were made in Europe. We discovered some boxes with Made in Mexico and assumed that the other 1% was non-Chinese sourced. However, we have learned this week that the Take-Along toys from Playmobil all carry the Made in China label. Please check Playmobil packages carefully. We still feel very confident in the manufacturing standards and lead-paint check system that Playmobil uses.

Many, many Playmobil toys are made in Germany and outside of China. We have checked the toys listed below and nearly 200 others. We only recommend avoiding the Take-Along Playmobil line.

I believe that Playmobil receives some parts from overseas--approximately 1 % of the company's products. Do you know which products/parts/materials are manufactured outside of Europe?

I just bought a Playmobil "Pirates Take-along Island" that says on the box, 'made in China.' Is there no one to trust for safe toys?

We have personally checked over 200 Playmobil products and have not found one single package that says "Made in China." In addition, their website states that 99% of the materials are manufactured in Europe. Our research shows that some pieces are manufactured in Malta and Mexico but we have not seen China on any Playmobil product.

I contacted Playmobil earlier this month and they replied with the following:

The only toys that are made in China are:

3670 - Remote Control Module
4330 - Fairy Tale Castle Mini
4331 - Pirate Mini
4332 - Noah's Ark Mini
4333 - Knights Castle Mini
4397 - Electrical Signal
4450 - Bunny Workshop
4451 - Bunny w/Wheelbarrow
4452 - Bunny
4453 - Bunny w/wagon
4454 - Bunnies with Hiding Place
5803 - Knight's Take Along Castle
5804 - Pirates Take Along Island
7350 - Underwater Motor

Unfortunately, we had just purchased one of the new mini sets and it said Made in China which is what prompted my email to them.

From the Playmobil website:

Only a few parts, less than 2 percent of the complete range of toys, are sourced from high-quality, long-term Chinese production partners. PLAYMOBIL sources these components because of the substantial amount of hand labor they require.

I recently went shopping for toys for my nephew and one store had a very large number of Playmobil sets. I browsed thru the boxes. Most of what I saw was made in Germany or Malta (both EU countries, so I assumed were safe) but a good few of the sets were made in China.
I guess it's just another instance of making sure you read the box.

I recently purchased a number of Playmobil products - their products are well made - this is what I bought:

- Carry along House, with handle
(made in Czech Republic)
- 123 toys (dumptruck, police car, firetruck, safari jeep with Rhino, race car, helicopter, speed boat, alligator boat, etc) Made in Malta

I just read the Playmobil website and it says 5% of toys are manufactured in China. Of these toys, the box label still reads "Made in Europe". REALLY DISAPPOINTED that ANY are made outside Europe. As with most labels, it should reflect EXACTLY where the product was made, not the majority of it.

Playmobil brings in from Spain, Malta, Germany and less than 1% from China.
