We have changed our recommendation on Legos as of September 3rd. After extensive research, we have discovered that Lego manufactures "special components" (generally computer parts) in China. However, all Lego blocks are manufactured outside of China.
Legos blocks are manufactured in the USA and Europe with blocks made from plastics that are extensively tested in Switzerland and Denmark and meet both EU and USA standards. Lego toys come in a variety of ages, stages and patterns. All Lego, Quatro and Duplo Blocks are made under Lego's strict manufacturing guidelines. We highly recommend the following products as an excellent addition to your Lego collection.

I contacted Lego earlier this month and they did say that some fabrics (plush toys/clothes) are from China as well as computer components but none of the actual Lego bricks are made there.
That's correct- we changed our official Lego recommendation on Sept 3rd. Computer components are manufactured in China but this leads to some brands (particularly Bionicle) being labeled "Special components made in China". The box may or may not actually contain special components.
New Lego sets now say on the box some components are made in China among a list of other countries. It seems that not even all of the Lego blocks and non-electronic pieces are made outside of China anymore.
Your new box may have fabrics or computer components inside. I confirmed with Lego this week and all Lego blocks are still made outside of China. Special components, some packaging and other materials may be made in China.
All of the Bob the Builder and Thomas Duplos are labeled 'Components made in ... China ...' now. I called up Lego customer service and they told me that fabric and electronics parts are made in China. I gave them the set numbers and ask them to tell me which parts are made in China because those sets have neither cloth nor electronics. The lady took down my name and email address and told me that she will send ask the appropriate party to reply to me. She then said that the bricks are sent to China to be packaged and also the boxes could be made/printed in China. Sounds pretty far-fetched. A few days later, I got a somewhat rude and obnoxious email from another lady "reassuring me that Lego has people overseeing the production of its components in China" and totally ignore my request to clarify the parts within a set. When I re-sent the request to her directly, she rudely said that, "we do not give out information on individual bricks." Well, nowadays I don't buy anymore sets with "Components made in China" in it. It is better safe than sorry.
Wow that's some bad customer service, I'm sorry! We have been reassured by numerous people at Lego in the US that the bricks are not made in China. Because packaging is generally thrown out and not something children carry around, we are comfortable continuing to recommend Lego. But we can understand your concern. If you find a similar substitute, please let us know so we can research it.
We purchased lego sets for our children this Christmas directly from the lego store which shipped them UPS. Today, when handling them, it was immediately apparent that the bricks sharper and rougher edges than legos in the past. Bricks had bubbles and discolorations. The point where the plastic broke from the mold was obvious on most parts, and I'd never been able to find these points before. It was very obvious to me that many if not all of the bricks were made in China because of the poor quality. Examining the box confirmed it - China was listed as a source.
Sir- Please return your Legos immediately to the Lego Store and ask for a new package. We have confirmed repeatedly with Lego that all bricks are made outside of China and they do not even have a brick factory in China. Lego manufactures some components- primarily electronics, packaging and fabrics in China.
Why can't they just make all the Legos and components in the USA? Do companies want to gamble their peace of mind for a couple of extra bucks? Just keep outsourcing till something goes wrong? and then keep doing it?
Lego is not an American company. It would be odd for them to move all manufacturing to a much more expensive environment.
I spoke with 4 different people at LEGO customer service. The first 2 stated that only the electronic parts and textiles were made in China. The 3rd person, a supervisor, said that was incorrect, that it would be impossible to tell me if a brick was made in China and that the box may state China even when there are no parts inside the box made in China. I asked if there were any brick manufacturing facilities in China and the supervisor told me she did not have that information. I asked her to check into it and a 4th, supposedly higher level person, contacted me and refused to tell me if there were any brick manufacturing facilities in China. She did, however, offer me a refund on the LEGO purchases I had made since I "received inaccurate information" from the first 2 people I spoke with at LEGO. It is unfortunate that LEGO has decided to risk their reputation and popularity by manufacturing in China and not letting the public know which specific parts are made there. I have since found other building materials for my child to use that specifically say they are not made in China.
I'm sorry you had a negative experience. I can only confirm what I have personally seen and been told by Lego. I have been repeatedly told by numerous sources that fabrics, electronics and some packaging is made in China. However, if you look at boxes that only contain bricks, we have not found any that have Made in China listed on the packaging. If you believe Lego is manufacturing bricks in China and importing them to the US without labeling the box so, you should take that up with the CPSC.
